Run River North

In the age of social distancing, alt-band Run River North still manages to make us feel connected with their dreamy melodies and poignant vocals. The Korean American, LA-based group begin their Buzzsession with an acoustic and intimate version of their song "Beetle." The song begins with lead vocalist Alex Hwang sitting alone in his room, strumming his guitar as he ponders "where to begin" and wondering, "Do you think that it's over before it even begins?" His honest and clear vocals strike an emotional chord as he sings, "Thought it nice to dream to be a beetle. I think twice, I don't want to be a bug. The story untold has already been sold to the highest bidder." Soon after, he is joined by his bandmates Sally Kang and Daniel Chae, who come in on background vocals and violin, respectively, giving the song a refreshing dimension. The usual baroque busyness of the song, created with the increasing buzz-like violin playing, is still evident in this socially distant rendition and builds to a climax with earnest emotion.

The band then plays their more recent song, "I'm Amazing." It begins with a screen recording of a Casiotron Beats retro drum machine being adjusted and setting the sonic scene for the performance. Alex and Daniel join in on separate video streams to provide a driving bassline and earthy, summery guitar riffs—allowing the otherwise floaty track to stay grounded. Sally then takes center stage in a grainy video of her standing in what looks like a backyard and captures listeners' attention with her iridescent vocals. This live performance showcases the track's catchy, psychedelic melodies accompanied by Sally's hypnotic grainy vocals, rhythmically chanting "Somebody call the cops / I'm amazing!" The song's surreal lyrics are layered over funky, earthy beats, making it next to impossible not to dance to.
