Old in Florida – You Can Be a Wesley (Free Download)
After close to two years of touring their first record, Heard Like Us, You Can Be a Wesley hopped into the studio and popped out an exclusively online two-track EP which is available on their Facebook fan page. Old in Florida/Talking Science serves as a two song summary of where YCBAW has been, where they are now and where they’re going.
The first track, ”Old in Florida”, is YCBAW‘s finest example of song writing to date. The combination of a soothing, wave-like bass line and a beautiful, high-pitched guitar melody draws one in immediately. At first, it doesn’t sound like the usual YCBAW track, but familiarity settles in as soon as Saara Untracht-Oakner’s unmistakably charming voice appears. When all of the parts combine, the result is an expertly polished all around song. An intriguing intro, creative and harmonically stellar verses and a positively huge climax allow YCBAW to say more in 2:26 than they ever have in every one of their previous tracks combined. I want to win the Stanley Cup and have this song playing while I hold the trophy sky high.
“Talking Science” is another shining example of how YCBAW simply knows how to write the hell out of a pop song. If this song was written and recorded three years ago, I doubt the finished product would hit as hard as it does now. Though YCBAW are still a bunch of kids when you count by the numbers, they’ve been doing this stuff for years now and it shows. ”Talking Science” is one of those songs that makes me want to go out and meet a new girl and then fall head over heels in love with her. It’s pretty, it’s poppy and it’s a whole lot of fun to dance to.
