Anticipation – Yo Soybean (Free Download / Buy)
The indie folk trio Yo Soybean could easily gain attention from their name alone. Though it seems to have been picked out of a hat of random word pairings, the unusual combination was inspired by the soybean farm that employed the band’s banjo player.
Comprised of Nicholas Mallis (leads), Ryan Sedgewick (drums), and Andrew Klein (banjo), the Georgian band has an energetic and infectious spirit in their recorded music. With a performance roster of six members, though, the vitality of these recordings provides only a hint as to how fun and captivating their live shows actually are. By combining their distinctive American country twang with the surprise percussive element of the African drum djembe, their songs are clearly set apart from the British folk wave of late, which is particularly noticable in their latest single “Anticipation.”
With their debut album Manifest Blasphemy set to be released at the end of January and a tour in the southern states until March, Yo Soybean will surely be busy creating buzz for themselves and making new fans throughout the winter season. With the Americana folk revival continuing to grow in popularity, this trio is easily set to hook into the wave and make a name for themselves. Hopefully their tour schedule will take them up North, allowing a few city slickers to don plaid attire and faux cowboy boots for some footstompin to their partyfolk tunes.
