The following article was written by Paul Hammer of Savoir Adore:
For people who know Savoir Adore (and especially those who know Deidre and I personally) they know that we spend A LOT of time together - writing, recording or just plain dumping around. But we also spend a lot of time working on other projects – songwriting, collaborations, post-production, vocal session work… all sorts of things. For example, this week Deidre is in Europe with French Horn Rebellion, a band both her and I play in quite often. She’ll be traveling from Zurich to Vienna, to Hamburg and Paris singing and playing percussion on their Levi’s Tour. For the past week I’ve been in Cape Cod recording with a good friend of mine, Ron Pope, who’s signed to the Universal Republic record label. Our friend Zach Berkman’s family owns a house in Wellfleet, MA and we decided to move our studio setup here for a week and record Ron’s new record. Today is the last day of tracking, and we’re almost done!
It’s been an exciting week. We arrived on Tuesday with a van full of instruments and recording equipment and set up in Zach’s living room which made for a great tracking space. The room is large enough for reverb, but natural enough that there were no silly reflections.
Wellfleet is a quaint and beautiful town on Cape Cod, but we had a lot of work to do so we didn’t have too much time to explore. However, we did find time to ride our bikes into town.
Our first morning here, we moved a grand piano we had found on Craig’s List into the house, which was a horrible experience, but well worth it once we got recording. Our studio setup was limited, but still enough for what we needed. A protools LE rig with a Digi 002, Adam A7 monitors, a couple of DBX Preamps, a studio projects C1 mic (which we used for most of our tracking) 2AKG 414s and a couple Shure 57s.
Ron’s music runs the gamut from radio rock-pop to soulful, americana acoustic ballads. Our intention was definitely to record something a bit more natural and acoustic-based for this latest release. For the most part our instrumentation focused around acoustic guitars, bass, drums, piano, banjo and even some accordian! – all of which sounded terrific in the natural space.
Today is our last day of tracking and we have two songs left. Our plan is to finish mixing next week and have the record up on Itunes by June 1. Ron is planning on calling the record “The New England Sessions”.
So, this is just a glimpse of what Deidre and I do week-to-week. I’m sure she’s having amazing adventures in Europe right now. Later this month, we’ll back in the studio to start working on our next record!
