I made fun of my favorite band recently for turning into dad rock. They will always be my favorite band, but you know, they’ve started to sound like they could be a couple years away from collecting copies of Reader’s Digest. Still, every Wilco release is a precious gift and I treat it as such. Today, Wilco released a single in conjunction with their Solid Sound festival called “I Might” and it has the same complex and swirling depth as the pop on Summerteeth.
The b-side of the single is a cover of the Nick Lowe song “I Love my Label,” – you know, because they have always had a really easy time with labels (they’re on their own label now, but I still like to think of it as a decade old ironic dig to Reprise). It’s hard to call something vintage Wilco, because they are a constantly changing band that pushes genres and expectations at every turn, but this is kind of vintage sounding Wilco. Listen to it now so you can get appropriately excited for the full length due out in September.
