What’s up everyone! This will be my first post here on the WILD honey pie so if you can spare a little patience and bare with me as I get the hang of this, I would appreciate it.

Recently iTunes announced that it was quickly closing in on “one huge milestone for music,” it’s 10 billionth song download. To acknowledge this accomplishment Apple is giving away a $10,000 dollar iTunes gift card to the individual who downloads that final 10 billionth song. As part of the occasion they have posted a list of the most downloaded iTunes Songs of All Time. The list is a who’s-who of teen pop-idols from the last two years with a Black Eyed Peas taking two of the top three spots (personally I used to be really into the old, hip-hop Black Eyed Peas, you know what I mean). Anyway here is the beginning of the list:

01. I Gotta Feeling, Black Eyed Peas
02. Poker Face, Lady Gaga
03. Boom Boom Pow, Black Eyed Peas
04. I’m Yours, Jason Mraz
05. Viva la Vida, Coldplay
06. Just Dance, Lady Gag and Colby O’Donis
07. Low (featuring T-Paint), Flo Rida
08. Love Story, Taylor Swift
09. Bleeding Love, Leona Lewis
10. Tik Tok, Ke$ha.

Now, I have few thoughts. One being that the majority of these pop hits have (almost necessarily) at some point been stuck in all of our heads as we repeatedly embarrassed ourselves by humming in public.
My next thought is a little more to a point. This milestone in music is truly a mark to be acknowledged. I’m not old enough to have lived in the times of true vinyl or eight-tracks but I do recall the Sony Walkman tape player and the rise and fall of the Discman. The progression of headphones. Napster. The first brick-sized iPod. And countless other once popular but now passed over elements of the music world.
Considering the typical life of most trends in the music sales and consumption world, this is big. Basically what I am trying to get as is this. It’s incredible how far the music industry has come in such a short time. The internet and iTunes have revolutionized the distribution, consumption and proliferation of music. For better or for worse I think this is an event worth recognizing. Cheers to Apple and all those artists who are topping that list – I don’t know about anyone else but I’m pretty impressed.
