If you couldn’t already tell, there’s a bit of sarcasm behind that title. No knocks on New Moon, I’m sure it’s good (for twelve year old girls). I find it insane how infatuated people I know have become with the maturing movie franchise. People don’t just LIKE these films, they absolutely LOVE them (sorry David).
When I signed onto Facebook earlier, nearly every news feed seemed to be about how amazing New Moon was, and how much they love werewolves now. Weird. So weird. It really is the next big phenomenon to sweep over the United States. Over here in London, the movie’s following doesn’t seem quite as loony, but I still have coworkers that would kill a person if they talked shit about Robert Pattenson (no joke).
I can take jabs at the film all I want, but I have to admit that its soundtrack is one of the greatest collaborations of tunes I have heard in a long time (probably since Garden State). Music supervisor, Alexandra Patsavas, who also produced the original Twilight film, is (in my mind) the greatest person in the industry at finding great indie rock music and pushing it to a mainstream audience.
She also works as music supervisor for The O.C., Grey’s Anatomy, and Gossip Girl. Just so happens she is friends with my cousin, and was in Venice at the same time as me recently. I was able to talk to her really quickly, and suggested the band Why? when she asked me to tell her a band she wouldn’t know. She didn’t know them, success!
With the New Moon Soundtrack, Patsavas has created a unique album that will undoubtedly help get indie music more exposure. Bigger artists such as The Killers, Muse, Thom Yorke, and Death Cab for Cutie are joined by relative newcomers, Sea Wolf, Band of Skulls, and more. I’m personally the most excited about tracks from Grizzly Bear and Bon Iver. Here’s a couple songs from the album. I’m not encouraging you to see the movie, but for God’s sake, buy this album. It’s amazing.
