BUZZSESSIONS

About

Last week, New York City was celebrating social media week.  It may not sound like a big deal, but to me, it most definitely was.  I geek out for this stuff, and spent the majority of the week at panels that talked about how tech was influencing music, and what the future may have in store for us.  Sitting at one of the panels early in the week, I realized that all these people were talking about music, but there weren’t any performers.  I thought to myself, “why don’t I have a band come with me and perform for these inspired music tech people?” We had already been planning to film a Buzzsession with Pittsburgh band Lohio, so I let them know that they would be doing something slightly against the rules.

On February 8, just after the Buzzmedia (Stereogum, Celebuzz, Buzznet, Purevolume) panel wrapped up, we walked right in like we were supposed to be there, told the woman in charge that “Mike” gave us approval, got set up, and started the performance.  As you can tell from the video, people were there to network, not to watch music.  This created a really interesting dynamic that plays out over the course of the video.  By the end of the shoot, we had definitely won over some new fans.  Thanks to everyone involved.  You are all awesome.  And, of course, yay for social media.

Special thanks to Derek Eads for another amazing illustration.  For more of his work, click here.

‘Buzzsessions’ is a live session series made by The Wild Honey Pie.  With each new episode, we travel with a different band to a different part of New York City and record sometimes-intimate/sometimes-wild versions of two or three songs which are given away for free.
