We never tire of seeing Dev Hynes dance, so it was with great joy that we received the latest video from Freetown Sound, his most recent album under the name Blood Orange. The five-minute-long video for “Better Than Me,” which was directed by Hynes, begins with an excerpt from Ashlee Haze’s poem “For Colored Girls (The Missy Elliot Poem)” that expresses the importance of representation, and how lack of it can make many of us feel unseen, unattractive, and alone. The poem sets the tone for the beautifully melancholic (and surprisingly danceable) track that speaks to our tendency to constantly compare ourselves to others, leaving us feeling insecure and unworthy. Hynes and dancers perform a modernist ballet throughout the clip, and Carly Rae Jepsen, who contributes vocals on the track, makes an appearance. Watch the video above, and be sure to listen to all of the terrific Freetown Sound, which was #7 on our favorite albums of 2016.
