Though her band, PHOX, is embarking on a Farewell (For Now) tour this month ahead of their looming, indefinite hiatus, Monica Martin has already resurfaced with new material. She’s teamed up with multi-instrumentalist and producer extraordinaire Jeremy Larson, AKA Violents, for a full collaborative LP entitled Awake And Pretty Much Sober. Our first listen of this team’s debut comes in the form of lead single “Equal Powers,” an explosive and enchanting entry into their world. Synths and electronic elements drape themselves over live orchestral strings, with Martin’s always-effervescent vocals taking the starring role. “Bridge the gap and make it ours,” she sings, before violin lines trace beautiful sonic shapes around the melody. Larson proves a perfect match for Martin, sculpting organic and synthetic elements so dynamically as to make this project hardly categorizable by genre or sound. We’re so excited to hear the full album, which drops on April 28th via Partisan Records.
