Vance Joy, supported by British singer-songwriter, Jamie Lawson and Oregon’s Blind Pilot, made a stop in New York last week to play a show at Beacon Theater. Despite the openers’ beautiful sound, the space unfortunately didn’t carry the sound very well, and the audience seemed disconnected and distracted from what was happening on stage.
When Vance Joy arrived, though, things took a different turn. Starting out with “Wasted Time”, his beautiful, soothing voice prompted the crowd to immediately get on their feet and dance in the aisles. Trying to be charming and keep the audience engaged, he shared a few entertaining stories on how he came up with ideas for his songs while living at home in Australia. Joy’s set was very lively, albeit a bit lengthy, playing for an hour and a half to the enthusiastic crowd.
