Waiting Around – Smoking Popes Waiting Around – Smoking Popes

The Pittsburgh Pirates, now boasting 17 straight losing seasons, have been the laughing stock of Major League Baseball for years now. So when the Pirates are coming up to bat, what should they play this year? They need to look back on their brighter days, with Bobby and Barry Bonds. They need to remember the good times and use that for inspiration, which is why Smoking Popes’ Waiting Around is the perfect song for the Pirates to listen to as they wield some lumber this season.

Smoking Popes just released a collection of rarer songs and vinyl tracks on their album It’s Been a Long Day. See this track of choice is working on multiple levels. It has been a very long day since the Pirates saw a winning season but not all is grim for the club, we hope. The second verse sums up the Pirate fan swimmingly, “I’m not waiting around / Till the sun comes out of the clouds.” With losing seasons comes dwindling interest but Pittsburgh is a city known for grit and glory and the Pirates have to turn it around sometime.  Right?

Once again they are returning to some younger players to find some success and they think they can raise some talent and finally become competitive. So like the Popes say “Everyone tells me not to worry / Everything will work itself out in the end.” And if you are a Pirates fan, there’s not much you can do but hold out and wait for one of your youngsters to “jump into the sky and shine down.”
