102 years. That’s how long the beloved Chicago Cubs have gone since the last time they were able to call themselves champions. In fact, it’s the longest ANY major North American professional sports team has gone without winning a championship. The reason as to why this is has so many angles: a goat’s curse, sheer dumb luck in the form of fans like Steve Bartman, awful productivity from the players & managers themselves, and so on and so forth.

You can imagine that being a Cubs fan is frustrating. It’s an abusive relationship where the disappointment we go through season after season is repressed with a lot of beer and a 7th inning stretch. Many have died, waiting their whole lives for the Cubs to win it all. Goes to show, being a Cubs fan is literally a thing taken to the grave. That’s why Kanye West’s Can’t Tell Me Nuthin’ from his album Graduation is THE song for the Cubs’ at-bat.

Kanye West is undoubtedly Chicago’s favorite son. Starting his career from the bottom-up and enduring hardships of his own, the man can literally look anyone in the eye and make them piss their pants. His swagger and talent is beyond anything humanly measurable. After releasing his last album, 808s & Heartbreak, which received mixed reviews, West has been dormant, or so we think. Nowadays, when he’s not interrupting awards show speeches or going to fashion shows wearing lavish fur outfits, ‘Ye is busy in the studio working on his latest effort. He recently said, through his blog, that his upcoming album will step away from rap and will be used as his means to cement himself as a “true poet”.

No song, or artist for that matter, embodies Chicago as pinpoint as my selection. The “Fuck You! Pay Me!” attitude that practically runs the town and shows up in its history is the same one the Cubs franchise and fans live by. Cant Tell Me Nuthin’ is the perfect response to critics, cynics, and haters with it’s blunt hook, “laa laa la la wait ‘til I get my money right, then you can’t tell me nuthin’, right?” in the Cubs case, ‘til they sweep the World Series.
