Jonathan Low – Vampire Weekend

As dreadful as it is to admit, at one point in my life, I was close to being one of those Twilight girls. You know, the girls who are always toting around their worn down copy of New Moon, wearing a Team Jacob shirt, and constantly searching for their own Edward Cullen. Thankfully those days came and went, or my social life might have consisted of biting my own friends. Regardless of my distaste for Twilight freaks, I still find enjoyment in watching the movies, and listening to the music that accompanies each new part of the growing saga. The third installment of the series, Eclipse, just released its album, and it’s mediocre.

What bugs me time and time again when I listen to these albums is the way the songs blur together. All three albums tried too hard to mash up various artists and not all of them mixed well.  Like any other Twilight album, Muse has an all too repetitive song featured.  Muse isn’t a bad group, but their music is all the same. They’ve been the same band for so long, and they need a change in their style.  Beck and Bat For Lashes song Let’s Get Lost is plain boring. Even with its electro-pop sound, it reminds me of a corny Let’s Get Physical remix (as if the song could get any cornier). UNKLE’s With You in My Head resembled every other electro-pop songs featured on the album. Too many of the songs blurred together, but that helped the good songs stand out. Vampire Weekend made a pleasing debut on the album with Jonathan Low. The song is different than anything you’d find on Vampire Weekend’s first album, but it’s not a bad song.

Artists deserve more respect when they experiment and add some spice to their sound.  What Part of Forever by Ce Lo Green is catchy, mainly because of the whistling during the intro, which resembles Peter Bjorn and John’s Young Folks. Obviously Metric’s Eclipse (All Yours) was chosen to express Bella’s battle between choosing life with Edward, or a normal life with Jacob, but that didn’t make the song any less appealing. The best songs on the album came from The Bravery, Sia, Florence + The Machine, Vampire Weekend, Fanfarlo and Metric. All the artists featured on the album are solid on their own, but they don’t mesh well in one album. Hopefully when the movie is released, their purpose will be explained. Eclipse deserves at 6.7.
