In the grand scheme of music, there’s probably nothing that I like more than a driving, up-tempo guitar rock track. That said, anyone who knows me is aware of my formidable soft side. What can I say bro, I got tons of feelings. I can really get behind a well written and sincere love song. Hardcore rock fans may mock me, but my argument usually begins and ends with the Stones’ “Wild Horses” and the murderers row that is Rumours. Say what you want about Fleetwood Mac, but Rumours is the shit.
With that in mind, here are 5 love songs (some new, some not so new) that make me long for my lost loves.
“You Can Have it All” by Yo La Tengo
“You Can Have It All” shows how fantastic a love song can be when its lyrics cut deep. The words are desperate and sincere, but the reason they transcend pen and paper lies in the fact that they are delivered with heartbreaking sincerity and openness.
“Lover of Mine” by Beach House
I feel it may almost be redundant to explain why I believe this is a beautiful love song. Every Beach House song sounds polished and pretty, but “Lover of Mine” is the finished product of a truly gifted wordsmith. I’m not going to type out any of the lyrics, but I suggest you read the song in it’s entirety.
“Something About Us” by Daft Punk
Not all great love songs have to be sappy. This is, bar none, the sexiest song I have ever heard in my entire life. If I can be completely honest here, this is the kind of song that will have you running to your phone, hoping to plant small text message seeds for an amorous evening.
“To Be Alone With You” by Sufjan Stevens
I understand that many great love songs are written with the original goal of, well, writing a great love song. The ones that truly resonate through time, however, are the songs that come about through love in its most real sense. Sufjan Stevens’ “To Be Alone With You”, lyrically, is perceptibly fictional. It doesn’t matter. Real hurt and real longing are omnipresent in this truly gorgeous folk track.
“Happy” by The Wrens
There’s no love without love lost, and this song is absolutely heartbreaking.
