Friday night shall forever go down in the annuls of history as a fantastic night out for The Wild Honey Pie. Two of us  went to the sold out Two Door Cinema Club and Tokyo Police Club show at Terminal 5, and it was quite the bonding experience. We laughed, we cried because of the bitter cold wind, and we danced until we were so sore that there was no getting out of bed the next morning. Yes, it was a bonding experience.

The first time I (Hannah) saw Two Door Cinema Club was at a venue in Paris (one the size of a bar). It was the first few months that the boys were on the Kitsune Maison label, and they were the opening slot in a showcase. I had a fantastic time at that sweaty little Parisian club thanks to Two Door Cinema Club, and I have been a fan ever since. Even in the light and atmosphere of a dingy bar, their uncontrollably catchy riffs and breakneck pop were remarkable.

Back then my friend and I noted how young they were and said, “oh, I hope they make it!” Well, they made it, and they are now suave professionals and very much at ease selling out big venues across the pond. It makes perfect sense to me that they’ve made names for themselves. When I saw them in Paris and when I saw them at Terminal 5, I didn’t stop dancing until they walked off the stage. Two Door Cinema Club offers not only great electro pop, but a great and extraordinarily energetic show. It was the perfect way to set the stage for the spectacular Tokyo Police Club.

Having had a few solid hours to thaw out from our earlier U-Haul truck Buzzsessions in Washington Square Park, Tokyo Police Club took to the stage with even more of the infectious charisma that I (Nicole) had seen from them throughout the day.

They absolutely threw down for the crowd of die-hard sing-along fans with their epic garage pop, and even managed to sneak in a few surprises along the way. They got some help from former touring pal Ian Hultquist of Passion Pit and Aislyn, and the entire gang made sure to announce singer Dave Monks’ birthday and bring him out a delicious chocolate cake! I may never know, but it has GOT to be a damn good feeling when a crowd of 3,000 whole-heartedly sings you “Happy Birthday.”

After Tokyo Police Club closed out the night with their set, both co-headliners came back onstage at encore time and let us know that they were going to “take it back to 2001,” launching into a sweet two-band jam session cover of The Strokes’ “Last Night.”

Their full-fledged show was a pretty amazing way to finish out a day of braving the winter elements with these guys on the streets of NYC, making it all the more exciting to see how killer our Buzzsession videos are going to turn out…be on the lookout for them soon!
