Horns meet southern folk rock with Brooklyn based band The Loom. At SXSW, they showcased their brand of folk, but with their LP Teeth about to hit shelves, this band is sure to expand towards a wider audience.
What strikes me about this six-piece group are their persistent drum beats and the haunting vocal harmonies. The Loom is no stranger to diverse arrangement as they utilize the ukelele, piano, drums, French horn, banjo and accordion in their debut.
Teeth has an innate beauty that is one part folk, one part chamber music. The Loom’s sound can only be described as something of a tapestry: with hints of Arcade Fire, baritone vocals reminiscent of The National, and the rumbling harmonies of Roadside Graves. “For All My Friends in Spring, For All My Friends in Fall” and “The First Freeze” are gems off of Teeth. The tracks are symbolic of the range of talent that this group has to offer and are successful examples of the results of their musical collaboration.
Lead vocalist, John Fanning, and his bandmates have Craigslist to thank for their union. Though some of the members came together through personal relationships, the internet brought the final few through an audition process. Their budding relationship is not unlike any group of good friends.
It’s hard to tell the many artists in the Brooklyn music scene apart these days, but The Loom is unforgettable in their symphonic tracks and sweet vocals. Sarah Renfro, Lis Rubard, Dan Desloover, Jon Alvarez, Alex Greiner, and John Fanning have created a truly amazing presence.
