Australia’s The Jezabels were without a doubt one of the highlights of my CMJ experience. Before I ever had a chance to see them plugged in and firing on all cylinders, I was treated to sweet seductive vocals of Hayley Mary in a stripped down setting.
Though our session nearly didn’t happen, the band found a way to come through and delivered one of the most spectacular acoustic versions of a song I’d ever heard. The simplistic nature of their performance, filmed in Stuy Town in Manhattan, is what I am most intrigued by. With only a guitar, shaker, and their voices, Hayley, Heather, Nik, and Samuel gave me, Lauren, and the black squirrels of Stuy Town a taste of Australia.
‘Buzzsessions’ is a live session series made by The Wild Honey Pie. With each new episode, we travel with a different band to a different part of New York City and record sometimes-intimate/sometimes-wild versions of two or three songs which are given away for free.
