Somewhere Along the Golden Coast is the third album of The Henry Clay People, who formed in 2005, proving their knack for being somewhere in between a more punk version of The Weakerthans and The Thermals. As a fan of the two bands previously mentioned, a few of the songs proved to be pretty catchy, however, some, maybe only appropriate if head thrashing alone in my car. Working Part Time sounds like a typical Thermals track (think A Stare Like Yours).
Keep Your Eyes Closed stands out as one of the better tracks of the album, with echoed, romanticized lyrics reminiscent of the Weakerthans Left and Leaving. This Ain’t a Scene is a mellow sing-a-long version in comparison to the many fast-paced songs on the album: “But, before you invest, oh you should find a safer bet/ And don’t you celebrate now because you haven’t found him yet.”
Like many other lo-fi, punk-rock bands, The Henry Clay People prove to show that romantic lyrics hidden in angst are underrated. Maybe it was the romantic undertones, but this album kept my attention throughout. It definitely had something special that made me want to hear what the next track’s recipe was. The album was released on June 8, and the band will be touring with Silversun Pickups and Against Me! this summer, exploring more than just the Golden Coast. I give it a 7.3.
