The Belle Brigade (@thebellebrigade) have a good thing going. They’re a brother sister combo from LA, and the music they play sounds like a more rocking version of Rumours era Fleetwood Mac or early 70’s Paul Simon. Their debut album was recorded at Capital Records over the past year and is being released by Reprise Records in April. Even without a full release, though, they’ve been a featured as an in store artist at Starbucks, which gives customers the chance to download an exclusive track. They will also be opening for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals during their upcoming spring/summer tour and are playing the slot right before veteran Emmylou Harris on Thursday at SXSW. A list of accomplishments that’s not too shabby for any band, much less one so young and without a record out.
The grandchildren of composer John Williams, they’re certainly not short on experience. Singer/guitarist/drummer Barbara Gruska has, in the past, played with acts such as Jenny Lewis and Inara George of The Bird and The Bee. Her brother, Ethan takes turns singing lead, playing guitar, and writing songs that never seem forced or disingenuous. In fact, quite the opposite actually; the music sounds effortless and from the heart. Their voices blend easily throughout the songs and never overshadow each other, creating a cohesive brand of classic American music.
“Rusted Wheel” starts out as a mellow soul-tinged folk tune but gives way to some serious riffing guitar rock. While the single “Losers” isn’t short on big lyrical themes, the build up and drop of the song make you believe that these guys aren’t just preaching to the choir. Never making a choice that seems out of place or discombobulated, The Belle Brigade have accomplished the creation of a distinctive modern approach to an old school brand of music.
I’m sure this rant won’t be the last you hear about this band. In fact, it’s probably just the start. That’s definitely not a bad thing either, because when the music is this good, you won’t want to miss out on what they’re going to be doing next.
