The National have grown impressively large over the past several years, performing at Jay-Z level venues no less, but they still know how to put on a show that feels sweet and intimate. Wednesday’s performance seemed to envelop the cavernous Barclays Center, making the event seem like a familiar, celebratory affair. Perhaps this feeling was the result of growing excitement for their Trouble Will Find Me Tour, but more likely, the closeness stemmed from the fact that, despite the size of the audience, those attending [READ ON]

While much of the Pacific Northwest is known for its laid-back culture, this festival set in Central Washington is anything but. The energy of Sasquatch! 2013 was a sign that the event definitely isn’t slowing down in terms of what it can offer. The line-up included acts such as The Postal Service, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Tame Impala and a handful of top-notch sets from international [READ ON]

KID MOUNTAIN MAKES US ‘HAPPIES’ [STREAM]

kid mountain1 KID MOUNTAIN MAKES US HAPPIES [STREAM]

Kid Mountain makes the sort of music that attaches itself between youth and adulthood, in that phase where life is still bright and intoxicating yet forcing just a tad more sobriety with each passing day. Their debut full-length, Happies, is full of reverb and playful melodies, and there are definite Youth Lagoon-esque moments, but often Happies sounds like an experimental take on The Beach Boys. Rather than [READ ON]

THE BLISSFUL NOISE OF XENIA RUBINOS [STREAM]

My first listen to Xenia Rubinos was similar in some ways to my first tUnE-yArDs listen. When I heard tUnE-yArDs for the first time, it wrecked my concepts of pop song structure and then rebuilt them with expanded parameters and higher creative expectations for the pop I would hear thereafter. The difference is Xenia Rubinos isn’t breaking down barriers so much as completely [READ ON]

YOUTH LAGOON’S WONDROUS BUGHOUSE

Although Trevor Powers isn’t reinventing the wheel, and his compositions might lack some of the crunch of  a few of his fellow psychedelic contemporaries, there’s no denying that his work as Youth Lagoon is showcasing a kind of metamorphosis. Inspired by the invisible area where spirituality and humanity meet, there is a definite ascension taking place on Youth Lagoon’s sophomore album [READ ON]

Finally, Phoenix gives a taste of their forthcoming LP, Bankrupt!, with the excellent synth-drenched new single, “Entertainment.” Bankrupt! follows the group’s breakout record, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, released in 2009.  With the world restless, the band, in typical Phoenix fashion, released a mysterious teaser on their website with the word Bankrupt! flashing across the screen, accompanied by an epileptic shock warning. Since then, the French foursome has announced the track-listing, artwork, and a string of [READ ON]

LISTEN TO NEW WHIMSICAL CUT FROM YOUTH LAGOONS SOPHOMORE LP [STREAM]

Boise’s Trevor Powers won us over with the sparse, sincere pop ballads that made up his incredible debut LP, The Year of Hibernation. There was something in that record of a mere eight tracks that possessed a childlike wonder. Equally unintelligible and innocent, Power’s vocals created a [READ ON]

Well hey there, folks! I can’t believe it’s already February BUT I’m excited because that means I get to share a new mixtape with you all!
