POSTER BY LYDIA CONKLIN

Down at SXSW and here in New York at CMJ each year, we host a party called The Beehive and invite the bands we love the most to share the stage for one special day.  This year, for the first time ever, we’re bringing The Beehive to Northside Festival with the help of Kohler and their Moxie showerhead that comes with a Bluetooth® speaker baked right in! Join us on Saturday, June 15 for a day of kickass music by long-time [READ ON]

 DECEMBER IS PEACE

Art by Terra Schneider & Maddie Rosemurgy

Music is inherently and intrinsically weaved into my life. Virtually everything I do, day in and day out, has a meticulously-chosen soundtrack. My guess, dear reader, is that we share this quality. For many years, I chose my music based on a single facet, be it lyrics, vocals, intricacy, simplicity, or whatever [READ ON]

funfunfun 550x235 FUN FUN FUN FEST 2012 GUIDE

Fun Fun Fun Fest began in Austin in 2006 as the only genre-based music festival in the country, with each of the four stages featuring a specific mood.  While our music taste tends to lean more towards the acts playing the Orange Stage this year (Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Santigold, Explosions in the Sky, The Head and the Heart, WHY?, etc.), there’s something for [READ ON]

OUTSIDE LANDS 2012 RECAP

For a festival that tries to be all things for all people, Outside Lands comes pretty close to hitting the mark. Sure, the food is overpriced and for the most part sub-par (although Wine Lands was a very good time), and I’m not entirely sure who found the time to check out the comedy shows, but when it comes to music (which was the point after all), this [READ ON]

LOLLAPALOOZA 2012 RECAP

21 years after its inception, Lollapalooza is a festival that does almost everything right. For quite a while, it’s been in a very convenient area and had excellent line-ups, even compared with competing fests such as Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Outside Lands. When done right, a great festival includes bands for everyone, and Lollapalooza does this to near perfection. Among the headliners: Jack White and Red Hot Chili PeppersJusticeKaskadeBassnecter and Santigold (for the dance crowd), Black Sabbath (for thetrans LOLLAPALOOZA 2012 RECAP [READ ON]

YELLOW OSTRICH

531 days ago by Eric Weiner

Earlier this fall, we were very fortunate to welcome Yellow Ostrich, one of my favorite Brooklyn bands, into our Ditmas Park home studio for a highly anticipated ‘Honey I’m Home’ session. Originally the lo-fi bedroom pop creation of frontman Alex Shaaf, the project now boasts a much richer sound with the addition of Michael Tapper (previously of We Are Scientists) on drums, Jon Natchez on horns and Shaaf’s masterful use of his looping machine (which was purposely excluded for this recording). Yellow Ostrich is a recent add to the Barsuk Records family, which re-released their glorious sophomore LP, Mistress.  Enjoy both “Hold On” and “Campaign” below.

‘Honey I’m Home’ is a live session series made by The Wild Honey Pie.  With each new episode, we welcome a different band into Sounds Like A Fire home studio in Brooklyn and record intimate versions of two or three songs which are given away for free.

We sat down for a quick interview a while back with the Brooklyn-based band Yellow Ostrich (@yellowostrich) at the Austin City Limits festival to talk about being signed to a label, how they translate their unique recordings to a live setting and, of course, Radiohead. Alex Schaaf, Michael Tapper and Jon Natchez also hung out with The Wild Honey Pie recently for a Buzzsession, which will be premiering soon. [READ ON]
