The Great GoogaMooga festival returned for a second year in Prospect Park, albeit a day shorter than expected. Rain canceled out Sunday’s activities, but not before we were given two days of great music, drinks and eats. Starting on a clear and beautiful Friday afternoon, DJ sets by Chairlift and N.A.S.A.’s DJ Sam Spiegel ricocheted off crowd-shaking sets by The Darkness, The Flaming Lips and [READ ON]

Yesterday, Australian radio station, Triple J, invited Tame Impala into the studio to perform for their “Live A Version” cover series. This is the same series in which Sharon Van Etten covered Nick Cave, MS MR covered LCD Soundsystem, Dirty Projectors covered Usher, and so on. Tame Impala selected Outkast’s the R&B jam “Prototype” from 2003′s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and stick close to the original, which is not an easy task when taking on the super groovy Andre 3000. It’s fantastic. [READ ON]

torres TORRES DEBUT SHOWS DARK SIDE OF HEARTBREAK [STREAM]

Ruminating on Torres’ debut, some lines from Lady Lamb the Beekeeper’s ”Florence Berlin” surfaced: “Maybe hearts are better, bitter, battered, filthy, vulgar — maybe that’s why the broken, lonely ones, they hold on a little longer.” Mackenzie Scott, aka Torres, has crafted a debut that holds on long after it’s over, probably because it’s the sound of her publicly [READ ON]

FLEETWOOD MAC’S RUMOURS

fleet FLEETWOOD MACS RUMOURS

Growing up, something always seems to inhibit a full understanding of your parents. There are a few outlets, though, that seem to completely eliminate generational gaps, allowing parent and child to see eye to eye — music is one. The summer I bought a turntable and played old Fleetwood Mac vinyls until I knew every line by heart, I saw more of my mother in myself than I’d ever realized was there. This Re-Addicted is a family affair — the story of how an iconic and timeless [READ ON]

Empire State TOP 25 ALBUMS OF 2012

2012 was a spectacular year in music — one with so many records we truly loved that narrowing down the list was difficult. Ordering it, however, was almost impossible. This was a year of shifting genres and experimentation. This was a year that introduced us to some bands that will remain on rotation for years to come and albums that are already on their way to becoming modern classics.  Along with the return of many favorites, we were given the debuts from Django Django, Alt J, Frank Ocean, Kishi Bashi and Purity Ring — all records that [READ ON]

 DECEMBER IS PEACE

Art by Terra Schneider & Maddie Rosemurgy

Music is inherently and intrinsically weaved into my life. Virtually everything I do, day in and day out, has a meticulously-chosen soundtrack. My guess, dear reader, is that we share this quality. For many years, I chose my music based on a single facet, be it lyrics, vocals, intricacy, simplicity, or whatever [READ ON]

Fun Fun Fun Fest began in Austin in 2006 as the only genre-based music festival in the country, with each of the four stages featuring a specific mood.  While our music taste tends to lean more towards the acts playing the Orange Stage this year (Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Santigold, Explosions in the Sky, The Head and the Heart, WHY?, etc.), there’s something for [READ ON]
