Celebrating the release of their sophomore album, Hummingbird, Local Natives were welcomed into Music Hall of Williamsburg last night for their first of three sold out New York City shows. Opening act People Get Ready was outstanding, a percussion-heavy guy-girl combo that really packed a punch. While the most notable releases this week may not be coming from any brand-new, up-and-coming artists, there are certainly a few veterans delivering music that feels like the first time — whether by changing their sound or returning after a long absence. A great album doesn’t have to be one that pushes the boundaries, defies expectations or moulds something revolutionary — the record can simply be consistently captivating and built upon a collection of really good songs. Despite having their name float by my periphery, I never really took the time to listen to Local Natives until now. It’s going to be one hell of a week of live music here in New York City. With Local Natives, People Get Ready, Freelance Whales, Palma Violets, and The Eastern Sea all in town, there’s no excuse not to make it out to at least one show. We’ve all been waiting for the newest effort from Local Natives for a while, but the wait is finally over!
