kishi bashi KISHI BASHI RELEASES SWEET BEIRUT COVER [STREAM]

Kishi Bashi, who made our favorite album of 2012, just released a cover of Beirut’s “A Sunday Smile.” He slows the pace a bit and replaces the horns with strings, then gives us a one-minute outro to, well, show off. He’s allowed! We all know Kishi Bashi owns that violin. According to the information on the song’s Soundcloud page, this is the B Side of the first of three exclusive vinyl singles being taken from 151a. Read more about it here and listen to his version of “A Sunday Smile.” It’s definitely a sweet reminder of what a gorgeous song it is, only this time with a little Kishi frosting on top. YUM.

ARTIST OF THE YEAR 2012

Brooklyn Bridge ARTIST OF THE YEAR 2012

Compiling our end of year lists is generally always a contentious affair. Not uncommon are emails back and forth about why this song rather than that song should be number 22 or shouting matches (at least the digital equivalent) over whether or not someone should have even made the list, much less have been number one. This year, arguments were kept to a minimum, as almost all of us had the same artist near the top of our list, the same album in the top 5 and, curiously, numerous songs from that album peppering the top 100 songs. While there was definitely some competition, a spectacular and much loved debut from alt-J for example, there was still only one clear victor [READ ON]

Empire State TOP 25 ALBUMS OF 2012

2012 was a spectacular year in music — one with so many records we truly loved that narrowing down the list was difficult. Ordering it, however, was almost impossible. This was a year of shifting genres and experimentation. This was a year that introduced us to some bands that will remain on rotation for years to come and albums that are already on their way to becoming modern classics.  Along with the return of many favorites, we were given the debuts from Django Django, Alt J, Frank Ocean, Kishi Bashi and Purity Ring — all records that [READ ON]

Chrystler TOP 100 SONGS OF 2012

Another year has passed, and with that comes our best attempt to gather our favorite tracks and order them from best to, well, the very best. This collective is about as subjective as it gets — it’s not something that necessarily represents what was popular or what certain sites wrote about. It’s simply the music we loved in 2012.

Without further ado, we present to you our list of the top 100 songs of 2012. While we had a blast putting this together, it didn’t come without an argument or two. What we agreed to below, however, is something we’re truly excited to share with you. These 100 songs are the tracks [READ ON]

20best 550x227 TOP 20 FREE PARTIES OF CMJ 2012

There are some people who believe CMJ is like any other Friday night in NYC, but they’re simply wrong. CMJ is night after night of amazing music and free parties — so many that choosing just one feels wrong. We here at The Wild Honey Pie love CMJ so much (as witnessed by our 3 parties) that we just couldn’t help but compile a list of all our favorite [READ ON]

PRINCESS MUSIC FIT FOR ROYALTY [STREAM]

I tend to get frustrated when I hear people talking about how “they just don’t make music like they used to.” Whether these people are referring to the days of Simon & Garfunkel or those of Bach, I’m really not sure, but something [READ ON]

KISHI BASHI AND TALL TALL TREES STUNNED AT JOE’S PUB [PHOTOS]

The dinner theater feel of Joe’s Pub, with it’s little round tables and dim lighting, was the perfect setting for Tall Tall Trees and Kishi Bashi last Thursday. Both artists’ mellow, joyous melodies echoed through the intimate room, sending the audiences jaws crashing down onto the floor.

The night started with Tall Tall Trees’ (@talltalltrees) front man Mike Savino on stage without his band. Though normally a four-piece, Savino filled out the room effortlessly with just his voice, banjo and looping machine. His delicate folk-pop was the perfect appetizer for the main course everyone was waiting for.

Kishi Bashi (@kishi_bashi) came on only a half hour after Tall Tall Trees took the stage, and while he normally performs by himself, he brought Savino back on the stage with him for much of the set. The addition of the banjo and harmonies made Kishi Bashi’s normally ecstatically lush songs even fuller, sounding almost more delightful than on the album. The two long time friends joked and bantered with the crowd, but the focus was never taken off the music. Each song they played, including a wonderful Beirut cover, was absolutely flawless.

The last time I saw Kishi Bashi, I almost wept from the beauty. This time, I felt the urge to get up and leap around (though, unfortunately, my position at the corner of the table prohibited it). The sold out crowd left the show that night uniformly in awe of the expert musicianship and truly wonderful show they had just witnessed. There were even people (sure, maybe just me) skipping down the rainy street after leaving.
