IRON AND WINE’S GHOST ON GHOST

22 days ago by Mal Foster

Samuel Beam, the folksy singer-songwriter behind Iron And Wine, has never shied away from building off-kilter and interesting ideas around his contemporary brand of Americana. His fifth studio album Ghost on Ghost is no exception. However, where this record differs from his latest run of releases is that it feels more much relaxed. Beam sounds much more at ease with himself and his songwriting, and although this means the gritty, introverted, intensity of past material isn’t present, in its place lies a much more [READ ON]

wtr 4.16.13 620x206 THE FLAMING LIPS, YEAH YEAH YEAHS, IRON AND WINE

This is a hefty release week, indeed! Below you’ll find sixteen, yes sixteen, new releases we’ve chosen to present as our top picks for the week. Diverse and super choice, no fan will be left behind here. There are rock and roll veterans (Willie Nelson, anyone?), debuts (Jessie Ware), punk all the way over to pop, major label crushers and unsigned savants. We’re particularly excited about the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as it’s been four years since we’ve had a full-length from them (I don’t even want to discuss the cover art, though…), The Flaming Lips, who always insist on bending our brains and [READ ON]

Last year I read a write-up accompanying a La Blogotheque session with Perfume Genius that stuck with me — “When an artist is heartfelt and when their music is served up, in earnest, when all you know of this artist is the conviction with which they express their inner selves through their medium, to meet them face-to-face can be an intimidating moment.” Such is how I feel [READ ON]

BIRD COURAGE’S ORGANIC WARMTH [STREAM]

I almost always love “stripped” versions of songs better than the originals. If a band can perform sans electricity and keep my attention, sign me up. Expert organic performers, Bird Courage are one of those bands. Stripped is nothing new to Bird Courage, who actually met through continually crossing paths while out busking. Together, they can still be spotted on the streets and subways playing songs for fortunate passersby. Like the exquisite marriage of Iron and Wine and The Tallest Man on Earth, their earnest folk [READ ON]

iron and wine IRON AND WINE RELEASES NEW TRACK [STREAM]

Sam Beam devotees rejoice! Iron and Wine released a new track today from his upcoming fifth studio album, Ghost on Ghost, out on April 15. The lyrical content of “Lovers’ Revolution” is in Beam’s usual language — poetic, ambiguous imagery. The sound, however, is new territory. With The Shepherd’s Dog, Beam went electric, and with 2011’s Kiss Each Other Clean, Beam went experimental. This track strongly suggests that with Ghost on Ghost, Beam is going jazz. [READ ON]

Despite fighting overcast days and torrential downpours, Newport Folk Festival still managed to achieve the desired effect — amaze viewers with a diverse, stellar lineup, quality production, and streamlined operations. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the weather only enhanced some of the more somber or intense sets. Why [READ ON]
