New York City knows how to keep its music lovers satisfied. While the door may have closed for some summer festivals (R.I.P. All Points West and Siren Music Festival), there’s always more fun to be had in the scorching summer sun. Now in its third year, Governors Ball started out as a one-day affair on Governors Island, featuring talent from a range of genres (Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Empire of the Sun, Big Boi, Neon Indian, Mac Miller, Das Racist, and more). Last year, expanding to two days [READ ON]

Yesterday, Australian radio station, Triple J, invited Tame Impala into the studio to perform for their “Live A Version” cover series. This is the same series in which Sharon Van Etten covered Nick Cave, MS MR covered LCD Soundsystem, Dirty Projectors covered Usher, and so on. Tame Impala selected Outkast’s the R&B jam “Prototype” from 2003′s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and stick close to the original, which is not an easy task when taking on the super groovy Andre 3000. It’s fantastic. [READ ON]

January Mixtape updated1 JANUARY IS MOTION

Happy New Year, folks! For January’s mixtape theme, I chose motion. Even though the new year is an arbitrary date and resolutions are hard to stick to and America is a hungover mess today and yadda yadda yadda, I still get really amped about the fresh start, and I’m sure I’m not alone. This playlist is meant to get your blood pumping and infuse your brain with happy vibes. Think of it as waking up on the right side of the bed, like, 31 times in a row.

Of special note, “Rooftop”, which appears in this month’s mixtape, is taken from the Lady Lamb the Beekeeper debut studio release Ripely Pine, due out [READ ON]

Empire State TOP 25 ALBUMS OF 2012

2012 was a spectacular year in music — one with so many records we truly loved that narrowing down the list was difficult. Ordering it, however, was almost impossible. This was a year of shifting genres and experimentation. This was a year that introduced us to some bands that will remain on rotation for years to come and albums that are already on their way to becoming modern classics.  Along with the return of many favorites, we were given the debuts from Django Django, Alt J, Frank Ocean, Kishi Bashi and Purity Ring — all records that [READ ON]

PITCHFORK MUSIC FEST ADDS DIRTY PROJECTORS, ICEAGE, SLEIGH BELLS

Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival (@pitchforkfest) recently announced that a slew of new bands have been added to their 2012 lineup. The first round of announcements from Pitchfork included big hitters Vampire Weekend, Feist, Cloud Nothings, Grimes, Hot Chip and Willis Earl Beal to name a few. In its seventh year, the fest will take place in Chicago’s easily navigated Union Park July 13-15. The now sold out three-day passes went for $110, and single-day passes are still available at $45 a pop, making it one of the most affordable festivals this summer. Cheers to the Pitchfork organization [READ ON]
