The time has come once again to travel north, eat too many lobster rolls and bask in the incredible music coming from Ft. Adams State Park. After tackling some of the larger, wilder festivals earlier in the summer, Newport Folk Fest is always a welcome shift in energy. With its smaller attendance and much more relaxed atmosphere, NFF is one of the few music events that leaves its attendees feeling more refreshed and relaxed than when they [READ ON]

Portland’s Mimicking Birds gave me Grizzly Bear-with-just-a-hint-of-Modest Mouse vibes upon first listen, so you can imagine my amusement when upon further research, I discovered that they’ve toured with Modest Mouse (and a slew of other favorites like Deer Tick and Jenny Lewis) and are signed to frontman Isaac Brock’s label, Glacial Pace. The more I listened, however, the more I realized that Mimicking Birds really aren’t mimicking anything specific at all. With their most recent single, “Owl Hoots”, their own mix of really smart psych folk and woodsy electronics evolves subtly until presenting itself as a different creature altogether. The gorgeous build and intricate texturing provide a warm arts and crafts feel, until the intensity [READ ON]

Atlanta’s Shaky Knees saw its attendance doubled, its lineup expanded and its length extended in its second year, catering to the rootsier fans of indie rock. Its headliners included The National, Modest Mouse and Alabama Shakes, drawing crowds of over 18,000 into the simple yet well-designed outdoor area. Diverse in its lineup and its patronage, Shaky Knees saw to it that good times were had by all who enthusiastically braved the elements for their love of live [READ ON]

With the release of their 5th album, Negativity, Deer Tick have garnered quite a following. Led by singer John McCauley, the album reflects his tormented core and the tautness of this 5 piece band. Deer Tick’s raw emotion was evident during this intimate concert in the Allen Room overlooking Columbus [READ ON]

cassettetapes copy TOP 10 COVER SONGS OF OUR DREAMS

Everyone loves a good cover. The kind where an artist really taps into a song they didn’t write and bring to it something completely new. We at The Wild Honey Pie are big, big fans of covers, so much so that we all spend our days dreaming up the ones that we want to hear the most. From bands long since gone singing new songs, to a compilation of artists singing the same exact song, these are the covers [READ ON]

We’re back with a slew of records we’re excited about! Au Revoir Simone drop their fourth full-length this week, their first record since 2009, staying mainly within the same delicious synth-pop territory as before. Another heavy hitter in the realm of synth-pop, Brothertiger, are dropping their sophomore record tomorrow, drenched in electronic 80s dance floor fare. And then, within that same sonic space, lies one of our recent favorites, Chvrches, who set the indie music world on fire [READ ON]

Despite fighting overcast days and torrential downpours, Newport Folk Festival still managed to achieve the desired effect — amaze viewers with a diverse, stellar lineup, quality production, and streamlined operations. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the weather only enhanced some of the more somber or intense sets. Why [READ ON]
