The Albums You Need to Know About Every Week

wtr 4.16.13 620x206 THE FLAMING LIPS, YEAH YEAH YEAHS, IRON AND WINE

This is a hefty release week, indeed! Below you’ll find sixteen, yes sixteen, new releases we’ve chosen to present as our top picks for the week. Diverse and super choice, no fan will be left behind here. There are rock and roll veterans (Willie Nelson, anyone?), debuts (Jessie Ware), punk all the way over to pop, major label crushers and unsigned savants. We’re particularly excited about the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as it’s been four years since we’ve had a full-length from them (I don’t even want to discuss the cover art, though…), The Flaming Lips, who always insist on bending our brains and [READ ON]

Opening the rainy Wednesday evening at Mercury Lounge was Alessi’s Ark (@allaboardtheark), whose quiet, soulful songwriting and subtle guitar structure warmed the saturated New Yorkers just in from the rain. First Aid Kit (@firstaidkitband) continued to swoon the sold-out crowd, offering tunes from their 2010 album The Big Black and the Blue as well as a few short stories of how the songs originated. The Swedish sister duo’s full, rich harmonies [READ ON]

ALESSI’S ARK

941 days ago by Eric Weiner

CMJ was quite the hectic affair last week.  After filming four sessions on the first day, one of our audio recorders was stolen, resulting in an unexpected upgrade to our equipment and exposing my uncontrollable addiction to B&H.  Once we met Alessi Laurent-Marke aka Alessi’s Ark, however, all worries seemed to vanish.  We heading into Manhattan’s Stuy Town, a secluded area that could very well be hours outside of the city for what turned out to be one of our most tranquil sessions yet.

Alessi herself was an absolute pleasure to chat with.  She told us stories of beekeepers, honeycomb houses, and her hometown of London.  The incredibly charming singer/songwriter then proceeded to play two songs off her new EP, Soul Proprietor, as well as a cover of Neva Dinova’s “A Man and His Dream”.

Special thanks to Melanie Steinway for the amazing art above.  For more of her work, click here.

‘Buzzsessions’ is a live session series made by The Wild Honey Pie.  With each new episode, we travel with a different band to a different part of New York City and record sometimes-intimate/sometimes-wild versions of two or three songs which are given away for free.
