Wednesday night at Webster Hall, a talented group of very young bands took the stage. Representing the state of Florida, The Dewars played an entertaining set filled with very light-hearted, but catchy alternative songs. The songs featured were cleverly written in terms of lyrics and had a wide range of instruments featured during the course of their set. Beyond the standard set of guitars and drums were a saxophone, a xylophone, and maracas that appeared to be dangled with bells.

Following The Dewars were follow Palm Beach County youngsters, Surfer Blood. Despite a plethora of appearances all over the city during CMJ, Surfer Blood brought the energy along with songs from their highly acclaimed debut album Astro Coast. This was the liveliest, most energetic set that the band has put on in the New York City area this year, with CMJ being their 3rd stop in 2010. In addition to tracks from Astro Coast, they performed a few new songs they’ve written since the release of their album back in January, which were very warmly received by the crowd.
Lastly, Brooklyn-based rising stars, The Drums, took the stage to a highly anticipatory crowd. After just releasing their self-titled debut LP, The Drums brought their vibrant rock sounds from the record to real life. While it seemed to take the band a few tracks to warm up and ease into their set, they became overwhelming crowd pleasers once they found their groove. Their most prominent track thus far, “Let’s Go Surfing”, had the entire crowd singing along. If you missed The Drums during CMJ, they will perform Saturday night, October 30th at Hammerstein Ballroom with Devo and Neon Trees.
