I have an admitted bias against EP’s and typically shy away from them unless they can offer something really outstanding and different. It’s a personal thing. I’m part of a rare group of people who still listen to albums instead of shuffling songs and making playlists. Given that most EPs offer a similarly brief experience, I find it difficult to maintain interest most of the time.
Superhumanoids debut EP Urgency, though, is extremely promising and attention grabbing. With a very polished and diverse sound, the 6 track release carries the weight and creativity of a full-length album. This feat is especially impressive considering that the band both produced and mixed the EP themselves.

“Cranial Contest” seems destined to be the EP’s single. A jangily, reverb filled-riff carries the song through till the end, while a simplistic but omnipresent drum beat gets the feet tapping. “Hey Big Bang”, the third track on the album, is so catchy that I almost can’t stand it. Like most of the record, a beautifully produced electronic track provides a stellar background for Sarah Chernoff’s ethereal and understated voice. It’s definitely my favorite song on the EP.
Urgency, more than anything, doesn’t seem like a debut release at all. Chernoff and frontman Cameron Parkins have an undeniable songwriting chemistry, and their confidence in one another shines through on each of the similar but very unique tracks. Superhumanoids are simply a group of veterans that seem destined to succeed. Rock on.
