Come hell or high waters of the recent east coast storms, Webster Hall was going to start off the month of October right with a killer show.
Tu Fawning made it worthwhile to be prompt for the early-starting evening with their incredibly intriguing set. Songs from the Portland quartet carry the soul and lament of a New Orleans funeral march. They are intense with deep, steady drums beats pacing the procession. Haunting harmonies and four rattling tambourines evoked imagery of chain-laden ghosts. They demonstrated versatility by switching up instrumental parts for every song, giving each a slightly different twist. October 5th marks the release of their debut album Hearts on Hold, and it is definitely one to get your hands on.
Suckers livened up the mood with some psychedelic background projections and carefree jams. An eclectic mix of echoic guitars, horns, and solid percussion create songs that are so easy to love. They are even more fun to sing along with, or whistle as the case may be with “Roman Candles”. Rousing falsetto harmonies and fun-loving attitudes made for such a great live show. Their new album Wild Smiles won’t disappoint you either! That very night, everyone got the chance to share in an epic moment for singer Quinn Walker as he proposed to his girlfriend who stood amongst the audience. So exciting!! Band and crowd alike joined together to close the set with a congratulatory rendition of “It Gets Your Body Movin’”.
Menomena finished the night in a major way. Foreshadowing a darker vibe with a drum set adorned with severed baby doll heads, the four members emerged from the shadows and launched into some heavy-hitting rock. Drummer Danny Seim played so hard that he knocked over half of his drum kit at one point! Their songs started out low and mysterious, then built to explode with intensity. The ominous Five Little Rooms showcased the eerie keyboard lead-ins and saxophone parts that add such rich and unique layers to their sound. Every song was met with wild enthusiasm and applause from their fans, all of them loyally singing every word in tandem.
It was definitely the kind of night that resonates in your body for hours and sends you home with that coveted partially deaf sensation.
