A Let Down – Spring Offensive A Let Down – Spring Offensive (Buy)
Lyrical brilliance; a phrase I would use to describe Spring Offensive and their debut album Pull Us Apart.
The Oxford-bred boys of Spring Offensive manage to incorporate a variety of point of views, literary devices and emotion that would make any writer, let alone lyricist, swoon. If that wasn’t enough, the vocal and instrumental backing is both clever and dynamic.
A track that really grabbed my attention was Abacus Rex, with a lyrical make-up that shines through with many similarities to Josh Ritter. Abacus Rex tells the story of a mathematician engulfed entirely in his work and the unfortunate fate he meets. The instrumentals within this tale range from distorted chords to simplistic beats, all of which grow increasingly dismal as the song progresses.
Following suit with the dramatic rise and fall of the instrumentals introduced in Abacus Rex, Every Coin introduces yet another compelling tale. This one is that of a man who devours his wallet. The track begins with strong, perfectly timed claps/beats, picking up more instruments and sounds as the story moves forward. As unusual as this song sounds, it’s actually quite compelling and the vocal performance is terribly brilliant, growing harsh during the moments of struggle.
One of my personal favorites on the album is The Cable Routine. With haunting vocals and steady drumbeats, this song about suicide embodies the emotion that one is expected to feel under such a circumstance. Slow Division is another emotional piece on Pull Us Apart. The subtle guitar chords throughout its entirety are perfectly complimented by the crescendo of crashing symbols.
Spring Offensive is quite a brilliant band. Pull Us Apart was lyrically, instrumentally, and vocally brillaint. We’ll be looking forward to the release of their next release The First of Many Dreams About Monsters within the coming weeks. Until then, we highly recommend you give their debut a listen. It’s a 7.8 out of 10 in my book.
