Songs That Inspired High Highs LP ‘Cascades’

High Highs magical and effortlessly atmospheric music has been charming us for a long time. We fell in love with the group’s echo-y indie pop  with “Open Season” and haven’t looked back since. Their newest LP Cascades is out 2/5/2016 and if the title track is any indication – we are in for another billowy gem of swirling pop. The band made us a playlist of tracks that helped inspire the album in order to give us a taste of the record. One track and a playlist and we are already marking Cascades as one of our most anticipated albums of 2016.

Machinedrum – U Don’t Survive

Just rediscovered this tune… Love everything about it.

Johnny Green – Oneiro (Balang Mix)

Big up to our friend Johnny making tunes in Sydney. This is a really nice warm mix by Balang – sublime.
– Jack Milas

Chromatics – Girls Just Wanna Have Some

Add to: ‘Guilty pleasures’ playlist. There was always a beautiful song there in the original and now Chromatics have shown us how tragic it can be.

The Smiths – This Night Has Opened My Eyes

I recently emerged from a fairly intensive Smiths phase, then I heard this song in a bar a week ago and the phase is threatening to start back up again. Great song.

Roseau – Salt

I don’t know much about her, but this is a brand new tune that I really like. Beautifully simple.
 – Jack Milas

Lapsley – Falling Short

Another new singer from the UK that I really like – very direct and pure.
 Jack Milas

Donald Fagen – Tomorrow’s Girls

What a tune! Love Steely Dan and Donald Fagen is a bit of a hero of mine.

Dam Funk – Rise

I don’t know much about Dam-Funk but this swings in a great way. Roll down the windows…

Says – Nils Frahm

I first heard this in a weird yoga class in a basement. There were lots of candles and it had a cult vibe. This track is a serious meditation and it’s such an awesome surprise when you realize it’s live at the end.

Ambre – Nils Frahm

This kind of work is really influential on my personal work. There’ll be some beautiful piano versions of High Highs music coming out early next year in this vein.

Chega de Saudade – Joao Gilberto

This sets the tone for my “Ambient Cocktail Party” spottily playlist. It paints a picture of a richer, older, more exotic world.
– Oli Chang

Aguas De Marco – Antonia Carlos Jobim, Elis Regina

More cocktails maybe by the beach now.
– Oli Chang

Stepps – Taylor McFerrin

Jack intro’d me to this artist. Love it..

Past Life – Tame Impala

Fave album of the year and made me home sick and all existential-ish.
– Oli Chang

Small Memory – Jon Hopkins

A beautiful example of the spaces in between notes.
– Oli Chang

Gillie Amma I love You – Four Tet

This vibe is special and sounds stumble-apon-able.
– Oli Chang

I Remember – Jon Hopkins

I like the tape quiver and the feeling of letting go i get when I listen to this.
– Oli Chang

Ride The White Lightning – Chrome Sparks

This is a great example of the exciting times one can have in the studio with vintage synths. I like how it’s the same thing for 9 minutes but the machines being tweaked takes you on an epic journey.
