Formed back in 2008, Snowmine (@snowminemusic) claims to gain their inspiration from love found and lost, forest trips, and circuit bending. While I’m not sure of exactly what they mean by the last entry, I can certainly see the influence of the first two. The songs on their EP Laminate Pet Animal, despite having electronic embellishments, have a very natural texture. The samples featured on the EP, though, are more than welcome and add a great deal to the fullness of each track.
“Hologram”, my favorite song off the EP, perhaps best embodies the influences above. Proclaiming that “loneliness is only love’s hologram,” the song focuses on a more piano driven melody, but uses delicate guitar additions to compliment the somber harmonies. Though I love the slower, captivating beginning of this song, I also appreciate the burst of sound that occurs towards the end. This is truly an out-of-this-world song.
Last Friday, I had the pleasure of seeing Snowmine at Glasslands. After having listened to their EP non-stop in the days leading up to the show, I had high expectations for their performance. Needless to say, I didn’t leave the venue disappointed. Incorporating their tribal beat patters, strong live vocals, and excellent guitar essentials, they performed a truly captivating set. It was definitely interesting to see how each of the intricate layers of Snowmine’s songs fit together in a live setting, particularly the stellar work done by the band’s two guitarists.
