‘Slip Away’ to a Lush Fantasy World with Perfume Genius

Just when you think that 2017 couldn’t get any better (purely from a new music perspective, that is), Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, comes out of the woodwork with a new single, a release date for his forthcoming album, No Shape, and a truly mesmerizing music video. The single, “Slip Away,” and its accompanying video are lush, romantic masterpieces, equal parts ‘80s dreamscape (maybe nightmare? There’s a fine line) in the vein of The Cure, Cocteau Twins and Adam and the Ants, and sumptuous epic á la Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette.

From the moment that Hadreas first utters the line “Baby, let all them voices slip away” and both the track and video burst forth with brightness and boundless energy, I was hooked. The sound, lyrics and visuals are simultaneously jubilant and defiant in a time where we need art that makes us feel both. Furthering the conversation he began on 2014’s Too Bright (and arguably, in his previous two albums), Hadreas continues to meditate on what it means to be an outsider, but instead of approaching it from a place of anger or sadness, he chooses to navigate his troubles in a way that is joyful and almost celebratory. He may not have everything figured out right now, but he’s realized that life, with all of its ups and downs, is a wild, exciting journey.

No Shape comes out May 5 via Matador Records; watch the video for “Slip Away” above.
