Rill Rill – Sleigh Bells Rill Rill – Sleigh Bells (Buy)
Breathtaking. Head-banging. Energetic. Fun.
Those are the best four adjectives to describe the revolutionary sound from the music duo known as Sleigh Bells. The twosome made up of Derek Miller, rookie producer and Alexis Krauss, elementary schoolteacher in the Teach For America program turned rock star, give you a hard rocking sound with lovable voice subtleties. Their sound of brash metal up against a series of rhythmic riffs deserve a subgenre of indie music all to their own. “Noisegaze” or “noisecore” would be all-too-obvious way to describe the sounds of Sleigh Bells.
The group released their debut LP, Treats on May 11th digitally, and the hard copy will be in stores on June 1st. After gaining notoriety in the Fall of 2009 at the CMJ Festival in New York with their song Crown On the Ground, the single gained airplay and people at music journals such as Pitchfork and Stereogum began to take notice to at the never-before-heard kind of music being produced. Krauss repeats “Set, set that crown on the ground” over and over again in the chorus each time building with more and more angst until an explosion of rocking guitar awesomeness takes over and carries the song full circle.
While no track exceeds 4 minutes on Treats, that’s probably a good thing to serve as a reprieve for your hearing and preserve your eardrums from blowing out from the feverishly loud beat. The lyrics are lightheartedly written and are generally catchy enough to sing (or scream) over and over again until you get a sore throat. If you want to see how versatile the band is, and only have 10 minutes to do so, check out the 4 tracks on Treats that begin with the letter R. Rachel, Riot Rhythm, Run the Heart, and Rill Rill (previously known as Ring Ring) show off the full spectrum of Sleigh Bells’ abilities. They consist of the toned down nature tracks, relatively speaking of course, to the all-noisy, drive with your windows down at 90 mph regardless of the weather kind.
Sleigh Bells has just as much energy live as they do on the record and are performing at various locations throughout North America this summer. For the pseudo-heavy rock sounds of bliss, catch them on a stop near you. In the meantime, treasure this debut-LP from Sleigh Bells, as it is one of the true “treats” of 2010.
