Now that it’s finally spring, we’re ready to start wishing for June. June 9th specifically, because that’s when Sharon Van Etten releases her newest EP, I Don’t Want to Let You Down. The title track proves to be just as emotional and heartfelt as the rest of her albums. While her vocals are soft and sweet, they don’t lack passion, and the harmonies that support her create a luscious sound that we can’t turn away from. The sound is comparable to Mazzy Star and Liz Phair rolled up together, and we’re completely infatuated.
Van Etten has shown again that she can take a universal feeling and present it to you in the most personal of ways. The lyrics are simple with most of the song consisting of the refrain “I don’t want to let you down,” but simple isn’t bad — it lets the feeling behind the words take center stage. While Sharon Van Etten sings to a vast audience on her albums, these lyrics plus her steady melody have you believing that it was meant for only you.
