Somewhere between Sam Rae’s roots as an improvisational cellist and the deeply poignant narratives of Midwestern folk lies her newest effort, “It’s Alright, It’s Okay.” As reversed strings and multiple instrumental layers seep into each other, the song begins with a feeling of intimate unrest, a sense that’s only deepened by her beautifully ghostly vocals. Wrought with a sensation that’s both resilient and fragile, she laments, “I could have told you that most things are never lost / and it doesn’t have to be an ocean body, but it is.” Following with her talent to loop and coat each new layer, the vocal lines are combined and abandoned, eventually resolving simply with an instrumental outro and the words, “It’s gonna be alright / Everything will be just fine” — though her tone betrays that confidence.
“It’s Alright, It’s Okay” is the first track from her upcoming album, Bring Us to New Islands. Enjoy the preview above, and be sure to check out the full release on April 21.
