Slugger may be her debut album as Sad13, but Sadie Dupuis is no stranger to creating infectious indie rock. The Speedy Ortiz front-woman just released the third single from her upcoming solo album, and “Devil in U” is an instant favorite. The effortlessly twisting pop melody shows us a different side of Dupuis, as she tackles the sensitive subject of an emotionally abusive relationship with a matter-of-fact maturity. At almost four minutes, the song strikes a balance between catchy, lively lines and a wavering, almost haunting beat that draws the listener to the emotional reality of the lyrics.
As Dupuis explained in a press release, “it’s about constraining your life to avoid conflict in the face of emotional abuse…no devil is worth your care if they don’t love and support you for who you are.”
Slugger is out November 11 via Carpark Records.
