Royal Bangs (@royalbangs) put on a damn good rock show at The Knitting Factory on Tuesday night. The three piece was boisterous, aggressive, and electric on stage, creating a full sound that generally requires a few additional hands to achieve. Fueled by some enormous but intricate percussive magic from Chris Rusk, the crowd easily erupted past the casual indie shuffle during the set (particularly one guy who I’m pretty sure was about to spontaneously combust).
As Ryan Schaefer’s vocals rang throughout the venue, it was difficult not to be swept up in the soulful, slightly bluesy way he presented the lyrics. The Tennessee roots of Royal Bangs were masked but certainly always present in the riffs and melodies of their songs. Overall, staying away from over-enthusiastic and cheesy rock moves, the band displayed a genuine high-energy performance that I would gladly see again.
