Pearly Gates Music is simple. Very simple. Their album, Pearly Gate Music, is entirely calming, yet ultimately has a limited variety of experimental sound, as if the band is still trying to find its true identity. By using a mix of instruments and varying vocals, Navy Blues and Oh, What a Time! sound somewhat like mariachi songs, minus the trumpets and obnoxiousness.
The sound of the album, however, changes with I Woke Up, due to the simple melodies that accompany the song. The album flowed smoothly, with a mix of songs that were quiet (If I Was a Rive), but then the bands attempts to be exciting with Bad Nostalgia and Big Escape. This isn’t a band that you’d listen to for a pick me up. It’s slow and relaxing, but ultimately anticlimactic at most points. Pearly Gate Music resembles Fanfarlo, due to their mellowness, and the lead vocals that sound drab, but not entirely boring.
Though the album starts off slow, but it picks up a little steam after the first song, Golden Funeral. The album wasn’t necessarily boring, but it wasn’t all too original. Not that the album wasn’t nice to listen to, but Pearly Gate Music could be any indie band. They have yet to establish their own sound that captures attention. If you crave mellow music, definitely check out Pearly Gate Music. The album gets a 6.7.
