On June 25, 2010, in front of a sold out crowd, in Royal Oak Michigan Passion Pit proved the stereotype that, electro-rock bands often disappoint live, away WRONG.
The evening started out with an electro-rock band from New York, BRAHMS. I strongly suggest looking into these guys, they played very well and the vocals never got lost in the mix of everything that was going on. To add more excitement they had a mini light show that lit up the venue. One concert-goer was feeling it so much that he thought it was completely necessary to crowd surf during Subtext is Deadly, in turn he ended up being the bands first ever crowd surfer. This man was clearly fit for the honor. New Yorkers – BRAHMS are playing at Mercury Lounge w/ Class Actress, Sun Airway, Sherlocks Daughter & Lemonade DJs August 19 @ 7pm!!!
Tokyo Police Club came on next and weren’t as exciting at all. The vocals were lost in everything that was going on and kind of sounded like a bunch of noise rather than music. After thanking the crowd for accepting them as a Canadian band and then exiting for the evening the crowd broke out in a USA! USA! USA! chant. Lets just go with World Cup fever, rather than a bunch of hipster douche bags?
Finally at promptly 10PM, Passion Pit took the stage and pwned. As soon as the crowd herd the first few notes of I’ve Got Your Number, that was accompanied by a cluster fuck of strobe lights, they went nuts almost instantly, along with lead singer Michael Angelakos.
On stage there were enough keyboards to stock a music store’s inventory, and at times three out of the five members would all be playing all at once. Guitars and bass were never missed by anyone.
Michael Angelakos sang beautifully, was in tune, and did his magical hop/stomp throughout the show. Angelakos interacted with the crowd often joking, and even introduced himself to all the photographers. Behind the beard is a witty down to earth personality.
The set was full of strobe lights, dancing, and crowd favorites like The Reeling and Little Secrets. The crowd gladly helped Angelakos sing different parts of songs like “Let your love grow tall”. Over all one could tell that the crowd loved the experience and even broke out again in the USA! USA! USA! Chant multiple times throughout the night to which the bad responded by joining in.
The best part of the night was by far when they ended the encore with Sleepyhead, giving the crowded an epic ending to a great set. After it was all over the lights turned on and everyone realized exactly how sweaty they were, the walls of The Royal Oak Music Theater were even moist.
Naturally after the show my friends and I “stalked” the band behind the venue. It was kind of strange because when we got back there, there was a handful of people as excepted but what happened next was shocking. A security guard came out and was like “hey hang tight the band is changing but they’ll be right out to sign stuff and take pictures.” This has never happened once in all of my concert experiences usually security guards trying to get the fans to walk away and leave the musicians alone. So it was most definitely bad ass of all of the members to come out and take pictures and converse with the fans that gathered. On top of that they all were super nice!
