Brooklyn’s own New Beard (@newbeard) are a whimsical delight. With a tongue-in-cheek name that pokes fun at the hipster culture from which it rose, New Beard have released a shimmering new album that’s quickly garnering attention from across the nation. The video for “Doom”, the first single, is just the right kind of kooky-quirky to gather a quick cult following, and, when your video features death by tomatoes, tubas, and explosions, are we surprised? Not at all.
While being decidedly garage in their overall ethos, New Beard exhibits sounds that fall anywhere from roots folk to Japanese pop. With such far-flung influences, you might think that their appeal would be quite selective. You’d think that, but you’d be wrong. Though hyper-unique, New Beard’s album, New Beard City, manages to remain strangely accessible, and with this wide appeal comes huge potential. Expect New Beard to be a name on the next wave of the New Weird America movement.
