GOLDHEART ASSEMBLY

Shuffle Through The Wild Honey Pie

Goldheart Assembly, a sextet based out of London, have re-released a video recently of their song King of Rome. While the video looks like a sweatin’ to the oldies/Paranormal Activity mash-up, the music is hardly an oldie, and the washed out monotone colors are not representative of the band’s approach to music. NME first published an interesting story surrounding this video and its certainly worth repeating here. Apparently, the footage is of a cult prayer of some kind and after finding out that Goldheart Assembly edited it for entertainment purposes, well, the cultists were none too happy.  By way of death threats and other forms of discontent, they expressed their distaste for Goldheart Assembly’s video.

King of Rome is the first track off their debut LP Wolves and Thieves, however, it is not representational of the whole. While King of Rome shows some signs of folk roots, it hardly constitutes London folk. What they do well is harmonies and that much is obvious throughout their debut album.

Give King of Rome a listen and pay attention to the layered vocals and more orchestral moments. Again, just because the whole album isn’t necessarily upbeat like King of Rome doesn’t mean it’s a dozer either. If you find yourself enjoying Midlake but need something that feels a bit less baroque, then I think you might find a happy medium here.
