Monogold’s performance was an incredible way to begin my Saturday night. Everything about their set was well constructed, well timed, and extremely well done. With tight transitions and great coordination with their electronic samples, this band displayed the perfect combination of polish and creativity. A three piece from Brooklyn, they had clearly already garnered a reputation for their live show, as I was told by several audience members to expect something pretty fantastic. If you haven’t seen them yet, I would definitely recommend you take a trip to Union Pool on April 17th to catch their set.

While Tiny Victories, the next band to take the stage, had a solid sound, the volume of their show was almost too much too handle. While Pianos is generally known for leaving a buzzing sound in your ears, several people without earplugs actually had to leave the back venue for a bit to keep from getting a headache. This was definitely a shame for those who did. The duo put up some great energy on stage, having just released some new tracks.

Despite being cut off halfway through their set (the show was running behind), Body Language closed out the evening well, creating perhaps the closest thing to a dance floor that I’ve seen at the small indie venue. With songs driven by incredible drumbeats and stellar vocals/harmonies, the members on stage were manically trying to spread some energy to the audience. Their attempts were obviously successful considering their funk-infused songs were called back to life after the first attempt to shut them down. For a full set, I’m headed to Southpaw on April 29th!
