As Hanukkah kicks off, what better way than to get in the holiday spirit than by watching 31-year old Matt Miller rap? If that’s not doing it for you, perhaps you know him better as Matisyahu, who brought his religiously based lyrics, beats, and reggae style to Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday, November 30.
After a fun opening set from Tally Hall (which concluded with a really entertaining cover of Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend”), Matisyahu took to the stage just after 9:30 with an eager crowd awaiting. The house music prior to his set was filled with hip-hop beats that got the audience all revved up. Upon Matisyahu’s arrival on stage, he broke out into “Ancient Lullaby”. Keeping the tracks coming continuously, the entire venue was hooked on the music. Right after his first solo beatbox concluded, Citizen Cope made a guest appearance. Citizen Cope played two of his tracks, including “Bullet and a Target”, on his guitar, with Matisyahu right alongside beatboxing. After, Matisyahu broke out his more well-known music from his “Live at Stubb’s” album. “One Day” was played before he left the stage as the dreidel shaped disco ball overhead spun. During the encore, Matisyahu played his new song “Miracle”, quite appropriate for Hanukkah, and perhaps his most well-known track, “King Without A Crown”.
Two hours later after the marathon set, Matisyahu broke out an Acoustic performance of a popular Jewish song, “Hine Ma-Tov”, that he sang in Hebrew. The song’s lyrics translate into, “How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity.” On that note, Matisyahu will be performing two more Brooklyn shows this weekend (Saturday, December 4th, and Sunday, December 5th). Both shows are sold out, but if you’re determined to see him, you can probably find a way.
