Widowspeak’s “The Dream” could be a gentle lullaby to an infant. Utilizing remote jazz brushes, uncurling ambient guitars, and Molly Hamilton’s creamy vocals at the center of it all, the subtle song arrives as if on a cloud. It recalls some of the band’s prior work, namely “Narrows” and “Cosmically Aligned.”
While the track’s not a complete departure for the laid-back Brooklyn indie band, it does find them stretching out to some extent, stripping down their relaxed aesthetic down to its minimal essentials. Across just several quietly mixed minutes, its twisting, slow burn bewitches us, showing power without resorting to bombast. It’s the ideal tune to wake up to, when those fleeting dreams are closest.
