An unexpectedly humid night on Friday, September 24th at the Philadelphia Naval Yard turned into a sweaty disgusting state of euphoria with LCD Soundsystem and Sleigh Bells as its soundtrack. The people behind the Philly based Making Time events decided to celebrate their 10 year anniversary at the Philadelphia Cruise Terminal with LCD Soundsystem as headliner.

The beginning of the festivities took place in a winding line of people in the street in front of the cruise terminal. The sluggish and disorganized admission into the venue caused half of Sleigh Bells’ set to be heard from a large ajar glass window parallel to the front of the stage by impatient and frustrated concertgoers.

Once inside, it was realized that Sleigh Bells is a duo that creates a musical style that is signature to them. Singer Alexis Krauss’s smooth ethereal voice found a way to pierce through Derek Miller’s wailing guitar riffs and distorted blasted beats. Performing songs from their debut album “Treats”, their setlist consisted of crunk blasters such as “Tell ‘Em,” “Infinity Guitars” and “Riot Rhythm”. One would never expect to hear the term “crunk” in the same sentence as “indie rock”, yet Sleigh Bells makes the joining of these words perfect sense. While Sleigh Bells made the crowd get their hipster “crunk on”, LCD Soundsystem made them spazz out completely.

The band fronted by James Murphy came on stage nonchalantly in neutral civilian attire ready to make bodies jump and hips break. LCD opened their set with “Dance Yrself Clean”, the first single off their latest album, This Is Happening, and the crowd sang and swayed along in a sweaty frenzy.

They made sure to play the old hits “Get Innocuous”, “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House,” along with new ones such as “Drunk Girls” and “You Wanted a Hit”. LCD chugged through their set with a couple of awkward breaks in between, losing the momentum of some concertgoers while letting the rest gasp for much needed oxygen. Despite the pauses, Mr. Murphy and company created a movie length dance party that initiated sweatbaths, hookups, and bromances. The three song encore consisted of “Someone Great,” “Losing My Edge,” and the appropriate last song, “Home.” LCD Soundsystem was little talk and all music which was appreciated by the sore feet and damp bodies of many at the end of the night.
