This past Wednesday, Jukebox The Ghost and Wakey!Wakey! continued their co-headlining tour with a stop at Brooklyn’s Rock Shop. For those that haven’t been, it’s a tiny little venue that time and time again gets bands that are also playing places like Bowery Ballroom. This means that if you’re smart enough to take the trip to Park Slope, you’ll get a far more intimate shop. This is exactly what we got.
Jukebox The Ghost is consistently amazing. Their indie pop tunes are the catchiest thing I’ve come across in a long time, and as much as I like their album, it’s their live show where they really shine. Tommy Siegel (guitar) and Ben Thornewill (keys) share lead vocal duties from song to song. Their highly energetic personas are matched by the passionate drumming and stick tossing of Jesse Kristin.
Their set was packed with songs off their 2010 album Everything Under the Sun, their songs “The Stars”, “Schizophrenia”, and “Nobody” played to perfection. Their performance was so good, in fact, that an audience member (who had choreographed dances for every song) decided they deserved an encore. The dude got up on stage after rabble-rousing his friends and started a big ole’ “encore” chant. The band didn’t really have a choice.

Wakey!Wakey!, Michael Grubbs and his entourage of über-talented artists, were a pretty big change of pace after Jukebox The Ghost. I always enjoy a good night with their music and Wednesday was no different. Grubbs’ voice is like molasses, every note right on key and accompanied by sweet female backup vox. The crowd wasn’t quite as large as it was earlier in the evening, but everyone there couldn’t have been more impressed (or so it seemed).
Their co-headlining tour is now over, but Jukebox The Ghost has some June dates planned in Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Watch out!
